This seal is a compatible replacement for the Jandy original, supplied as the Mechanical Shaft Seal, 5/8-Inch ID, Compatible with Jandy Pro Series Pumps. In service it keeps water out of the motor side of the pump while allowing the shaft to rotate. This is a consumable in practice: the sealing faces score and leak, which lets water reach the motor bearings — a failure that destroys the motor if left unattended.
